When Toono moves from Tokyo to Mori Moori Private School, he makes Yaguchi his only friend. In Steven Universe season five on Hulu, Yellow's ability to alter the Gems' physical form was a major plot point for both the first and the fifth seasons. The Gems are royalty, and Yellow has a very specific position on Earth. He is the leader of his species and must never interact with Gems below him. It is also his duty to protect his subjects and colonies.
After Steven saves the Gems from their fate, he uses his abilities to heal Cherry Quartz, restoring it to its original state. He then takes Cherry Quartz to the Gem educational center called Little Homeschool, where he teaches Gems how to live on Earth, free from the control of Diamonds. While teaching Gems how to be safe, Steven encounters Jasper, a ruthless Gem who challenges him to a fight. Steven wins the fight and asks Jasper to teach him his new power.
Yellow's ability to change the Gems' physical forms has an underlying psychological motive: to avoid having any negative repercussions on the world, Yellow has to destroy the Off-Colors. However, his ability to control the Gems' emotions is a secondary goal. Yellow wants to make sure that he does not lose Rose Quartz and may have some other motive for wanting to destroy the Off-Colors.
The character of Rose Quartz is also a major plot point of the series. She gave up her physical form to give Steven a chance to survive. She is a devoted mother and a caring friend to Steven. Her love for Steven develops into a romantic relationship and makes her an important character in the series. Ultimately, she saves the world by using her magical powers in her belly button.
